EenVandaag, a Dutch current affairs TV program, recently conducted a survey on their youth's downloading habits. What the survey found was that a whopping 93 of the youngsters download content in a manner that most laws would consider illegal, citing the use of
BitTorrent among other popular download programs.
With a sample of 3,500 youngsters aged 12-24, EenVandaag found that only 5 of the group actually use paid download services like iTunes and
Steam, while the last 2 , I presume, do not have "downloading habits" that the survey asks for.
But before you go judge the Dutch, you have to understand that
downloading copyrighted material off the Internet for personal use is NOT illegal in The
Netherlands -
uploading is. This is a country that legalized marijuana and found that pot-smoking was actually reduced after.
Of course, there are many flaws to the accuracy of the survey. For one, the survey was packaged as a "download survey," so the data gathering most likely attracted respondents who are experienced on the subject, instead of a sampling method that would more accurately represent the population in general.
We gotta remember that casual surveys like this one can be misleading. But fact remains, that 93 or not, Dutch youngsters are definitely into the use of illegal download services.
